William F. Byrne

There is a Patrick H. Byrne, born in Ireland, living in New York City, who could be the father of William Francis Byrne. Patrick is 26 in the 1860 census, 35 in the 1870a/1870b census, and 44 in the 1880 census. He and his wife Mary had a son William, 4 in 1870 and 14 in 1880. William was born in New York State, but there is no indication that it was Albany. There were other children. And in 1880, Patrick is a widower and there is a John Byrne, 56, and family living next dooor. They are living at 888 Seventh Avenue (now a 46-story building across from Carnegie Hall, built in 1891).

The 1892 New York census for the 11th Ward in Albany has four Byrnes living together: Mary 35, James 33 born in Ireland, William 29, and Margaret 27.

William Francis and Mary Cassidy Byrne were married in 1885 based on the 1910 census.

New York City Births, 1846-1909, says daughter Mary Byrne was born September 25, 1899, in Manhattan. Her father was William Frances Byrne, 38, born in Albany, NY. Her mother was Mary Cassidy Byrne, 38, born in Albany.

New York City Births, 1866-1909, says son Francis Byrne was born June 23, 1902, in Manhattan. His family lived at 420 West 44th Street. His father was William F. Byrne, 39, lawyer, born in U.S.. His mother was Mary L. Cassidy Byrne, 37, born in New York City.

New York City Municipal Deaths, 1795-1949, says Maria Byrne died at age 3 at 420 W. 44th St. in Manhattan. She was buried August 7, 1902 in Calvary Cemetery. Her father was William F. Byrne. Her mother was Mary L. Byrne.

In the 1905 New York State census, the Byrne household includes Thomas Condon, 28, a cousin of William, and Anna Cassidy, 28, a sister-in-law of William.

The Byrne family lived at 509 Pelham Manor Road (Siwanoy Place after 1915) in Pelham Manor Village (part of the Town of Pelham). This is between I-95 (exit 15) and the Hutchinson River Parkway (exit 9), south of Colonial Avenue. Grand Central Terminal is 29 minutes via MetroNorth’s New Haven line. City directories show the following for William F. Byrne.

William F. Byrne is listed as a lawyer at 444 W. 44th Street on page 1052 of the 1916 edition of Bender's Lawyers' Diary and Directory for the State of New York. The list is as of December 1, 1915.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, Mary Byrne is shown as a widow, renting an apartment at 17 West 106th Street in Manhattan. So, William evidently died sometime between 1917 and 1920. The 1920 census also shows that Mary was born in Albany. Dentist Jacob P. Hassinge and his family are shown as renting 509 Siwanoy Place in Pelham Manor.

In the 1930 U. S. Census, Mary Byrne is back in Pelham Manor living at 509 Siwanoy Place. Living with Mary in 1930 was her sister Anna J. Cassidy, 63, parents born in Canada. Also living there were a boarder and a maid

Mary Byrne died April 20, 1938. in Pelham Manor, New York. Source: New York Department of Health; Albany, NY; NY State Death Index. An April 29 obituary in Orlando, Florida, says Mary L, Byrne died April 20, 1938. It says the husband was William F. Byrne and her children were Anna M., Ellen E., Arthur, Charles, and Frank.

In the 1940 U. S. Census, Anna J. Byrne, 53 designer, is owner and living at 509 Siwanoy Place in Pelham Manor. Also there are a comppanion and a lodger, as well as two couples in separate households renting from Anna.

William and Mary's son Arthur F. Byrne, 59, of 1274 Eatontown Blvd., Oceanport, New Jersey, died July 16, 1949. He was the husband of Emma Wardell Byrne. He was born at Jersey City. He had been a resident of Oceanport seven years. He was the son of the late William and Mary Cassidy Byrne. Besides his wife he was survived by a daughter, Georgene Byrne, who lived at home; a brother, Francis X. Byrne, Mount Vernon, N.Y., and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Robinson, Pelham, N.Y., and Miss Helen Byrne, New York city. See: Find A Grave. (His brother Charles had died a year earlier.) Arthur's birth record says he was born August 15, 1889, at Saint Michael-catholic, Jersey City, and christened August 25, 1889 at Saint Michael-catholic. William and Mary's son Charles Byrne's birth record says he was born on August 30, 1894, in Rossville, Richmond, New York. His mother was Mary Cassidy Byrne, age 32, born in New York. His father was Wm. F. Byrne, age 32, a clerk, born in New York. Rossville is a neighborhood of Staten Island, across Arthur Kill from Carteret, New Jersey.

Charles Joseph Byrne's death certificate says he was born on August 30, 1894, in Staten Island, New York, and died March 27, 1948, at work at 2 am of arterio sclerotic heart disease. He died at age 53. He was a foreman at the Lily Tulip Co. when he died. He and his wife Mary lived at 156 14 59th Avenue in Flushing, Queens. His parents were William and Mary Cassidy Byrne, both born in Albany, New York.

Charles Joseph Byrne's enlistment form for the New York Naval Militia says he enlisted on August 31, 1912, was age 19, and lived at 509 Pelham Street, Pelham Manor, New York.
