Summary of the Family Tree of Peter and Marilyn Carroll Biggins

62½% Irish Irish Flag    25% German  German Flag   12½% Swiss Swiss Flag

  1. Five Generations. The five generations were roughly born in 1820, 1850, 1880, 1910, and 1940. This is as far back as our genealogical research goes, except that a 1790 generation is available for Peter's German ancestors. Information for the 1820 generation is incomplete.
  2. Surnames. Alleman, Berles, Biggins, Bitter, Breen, Carroll, Conway, Drüecke, Drüeke, Drueke, Fassnacht, Flannery, Foy, Gibbons, Grady, Graham, Green, Hartigan, Hauck, Hauser, Heller, Hesse, Higgins, Kenny, Knoche, Koch, Krämer, Lavo, McDonald, McDonnel, McNally, Meyers, Murray, O'Malley, Schickell, Schmitt, Schumm, Smith, Spiekermann, Stanton, Starke, Struck, Tracy, Walsh, Wittenmeier, Young, Zugelder
  3. European Origins. The 32 great great grandparents from the 1820 generation were all born in Europe, 20 were Irish, 8 were German, and 4 were Swiss. Peter and Marilyn's children, therefore, are 5/8ths Irish, 1/4th German, and 1/8th Swiss (German-speaking). Country of origin is indicated on the tree by present-day flags. Ireland was actually ruled by England. Germany was separate kingdoms of Prussia, Bavaria, and Württemberg, and the Electorate of Mainz (later added to the Grand Duchy of Baden).
  4. Homes in Europe. Only two specific places have been found in Europe where our ancestors lived: the Foy farm in Derreennascooba (Ireland) and the Druecke house in Ostentrop (Germany). Both were found as a result of travel to the places.
  5. Immigration to America. Between 1830 and 1880, a member of each line immigrated to the United States from Europe. They came on sailing ships to New York and Baltimore. The first names of immigrants are in italics on the tree.
  6. Homes in America. The locations were primarily Chicago, Illinois; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Green County, Wisconsin. Also: Tiffin, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; Albany, White Hall, and Nunda New York; and Ontario, Canada. The earlier generations lived on farms or in cities. The later generations lived in suburbs.
  7. Family Histories. Family histories can be seen by clicking on the family name. Most family histories start with a mini-tree with two generations of ancestors and end with a list of three generations of descendants. It has been possible to write histories for only 10 of the 16 families in the 1820 generation.
  8. Life Span. Peter and Marilyn's ancestors lived an average of 69 years, ranging from 27 to 91 years. Rose Smith Drueke was 91 when she died. Her mother Christine Koch Smith was 27. Note that the 69 years is an average for people who had all reached child-bearing age.
  9. Family Size. The families in the five generations had 1 to 10 children, with an average of 4.5.
  10. Religion. All the families in the five generations were Roman Catholic.
  11. Occupation. The breadwinners in the five generations had 14 different occupations: carpenter, consultant, contractor, farmer, grocer, laborer, liquor dealer, manufacturer, musician, policeman, railway mail clerk, sales manager, saloon keeper, and undertaker.
  12. Education. The first known high school graduates were in the 1880 generation. The first college graduates were in the 1910 generation. The first post graduates were in the 1940 generation.
  13. Deep Ancestry. Through Y-chromosome DNA testing, the deep ancestry of four of the 16 great great grandfathers have been identified through Y-chromosome DNA testing as descending from: Clan Colla, Old Saxony, Breassal Breac, and Niall of the Nine Hostages.
